About ancient Chinese seals

Chinese seals have a history of more than three thousand years. Early seals were related to the making of inscriptions on ritual vessels, whilst later seals were used as a means of certifying and validation documents.

During the Spring and Autumn period (B.C. 770 - 476) and the Warring states period (B.C 475 - 221), seals were used to certify approval. In this sense, seals became symbols of power and status of the owner.

Seals were made in a variety of materials including bronze, porcelain, stone and jade. The art of seal making developed along the lines of painting and calligraphy. It became indispensable items for the ancient Chinese scholars, writers, calligraphers and painters. Seals bearing names or aliasies were used as signets indentifying the calligrahers and painters. Seal marks denotes authenticity and connoisseurship.
